Excerpt from Horween's website Chromexcel (spelled CXL on the building) is a combination tanned leather that goes through at least 89 steps, takes 28 working days, and occupies all five floors of the facility. Needless to say, it's complicated. In any tannery, the chemical reactions that transform salted and aged hides into leather require a certain amount of "cooking."
Chrome Excel is a combination tanned leather made by Horween. It is tanned using traditional methods that have remained unchanged for over 100 years, and is treated with a blend of four or more oils that is then allowed to penetrate the leather.
Therefore, when you bend or rub the leather, it pulls up, and the oil inside moves within the fibers, creating a white streaky look.
